Nigeria experienced a notable shift in its Mpox outbreak dynamics. According to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), the country recorded 54 new suspected Mpox cases, marking a decrease from the 75 cases reported the previous week.
Despite this decline in suspected cases, the number of confirmed cases saw an increase, rising from three to six within the same period.
The NCDC's latest epidemiological report highlights that "the cumulative figures for 2024 show that 84 confirmed cases and 1,237 suspected cases have been reported so far this year."
This enhances the ongoing challenge of managing the outbreak, which has affected 25 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), impacting 57 Local Government Areas. Notably, Plateau, Delta, FCT, Katsina, and Imo states reported new confirmed cases in the past week.
Despite the rise in confirmed cases, the Case Fatality Rate (CFR) remains low, with zero deaths recorded among confirmed cases in 2024. The National Mpox Emergency Operations Center (EOC) continues to coordinate the response efforts, collaborating with multiple sectors and partners to contain the virus's spread.
Preventive measures are being emphasized by health authorities, including avoiding close contact with symptomatic individuals, maintaining good hand hygiene, and using protective gear when caring for suspected cases.
Healthcare providers are urged to remain vigilant, especially in affected areas, and to isolate suspected cases promptly to prevent further transmission.
Public education is also a key focus, with the NCDC encouraging citizens to report symptoms early and adhere to isolation guidelines if diagnosed with Mpox. The agency advises the public to exercise caution, particularly in states where cases have been reported, and provides a toll-free number (6232) for more information or to report suspected cases
