The political landscape in Nigeria was stirred by the endorsement of Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, for the 2027 Lagos State governorship.
This endorsement came from several groups, including the Coalition of Nigerian Youth Leaders (CONYL) and the Middle Belt Youths, who praised Seyi Tinubu for his philanthropic efforts and leadership qualities.
The Friends of Seyi Tinubu (FOST) described him as a "visionary leader with a rare blend of intellect, empathy, and strategic acumen."However, these endorsements have not been without controversy.
Joe Igbokwe, a prominent member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), criticized the endorsements, suggesting they were a ploy to undermine President Tinubu.
He questioned, "Who are these faceless people pushing Seyi Tinubu for Lagos governor? This is a needless distraction."
The Coalition of Lagos Indigenous Youths also rejected the endorsement, emphasizing that Seyi Tinubu is a non-indigene and stating, "There is no vacancy for non-indigenes in Lagos State in 2027."
They argued that the endorsement was an attempt to deny Lagos indigenes their right to govern themselves.
Similarly, the Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) opposed the idea, with spokesperson Hakeem Amode questioning whether governorship should become an inheritance. "Governorship is not a gift," he asserted, warning against any attempts to impose Seyi Tinubu as the next governor.
Human rights activist Deji Adeyanju added to the criticism, describing the endorsement as "laughable" and questioning if Lagos State was becoming a monarchy. He remarked, "Is Lagos a monarchy state, where the Tinubu’s family is supreme?"
