Man Apprehended Following Attempt to Divert Mexico-Bound Flight to U.S.

A dramatic incident recently unfolded in the skies over Mexico when a 31-year-old man attempted to divert a domestic flight bound for Tijuana to the United States.

The flight, operated by Volaris and identified as an Airbus A320, had taken off from the central city of Leon, Guanajuato, at approximately 7:17 am local time.

However, the journey was abruptly interrupted about 45 minutes into the flight when the man, reportedly traveling with family, assaulted a flight attendant and tried to force his way into the cockpit.

According to a statement from the Secretariat of Security and Civilian Protection, "A subject assaulted a flight attendant and attempted to enter the cockpit to divert the flight to the United States."

The quick-thinking crew members managed to subdue the man and issued an alert, prompting an emergency landing at Guadalajara International Airport. This swift action ensured the safety of all passengers on board, although the exact number of passengers remains undisclosed.

The motive behind the man's drastic actions was revealed in a report from the flight operator, Volaris. It stated that the aggressor claimed a close relative had been kidnapped and that he had received threats of harm if he proceeded to Tijuana. This revelation adds a layer of complexity to the incident, highlighting the potential influence of external threats on the man's behavior.

Guanajuato, the state from which the flight originated, is known for being one of the regions hardest hit by drug cartel violence in Mexico. The area has seen a rise in crimes such as extortion and kidnapping, which may have played a role in the man's desperate attempt to change the flight's course.

After the arrest, the flight resumed its original journey to Tijuana, ensuring that the passengers reached their intended destination without further incident. The authorities have not released additional details about the man's identity or the specific charges he faces following the arrest.
