Leicester City Football Club has parted ways with manager Steve Cooper after a brief tenure of just five months. Cooper, who took over the managerial role on June 20, 2024, following Enzo Maresca's departure to Chelsea, was dismissed after overseeing only 12 Premier League matches.
His sacking came in the wake of a 2-1 home defeat to Chelsea, managed by his predecessor Maresca, which left Leicester languishing in 16th place, merely two points above the relegation zone.
Cooper's stint at Leicester was marked by a challenging start to the season, with the team securing only two wins and four draws in the league. The club's decision to terminate his contract was influenced by a five-game winless streak across all competitions, exacerbating their precarious position in the league standings.
Despite leading the team into the Carabao Cup round-of-16, where they were eliminated by Manchester United, Cooper's overall performance did not meet the club's expectations.
The club announced that First Team Coach Ben Dawson, along with coaches Danny Alcock and Andy Hughes, will temporarily oversee training sessions as Leicester begins the search for a new manager. Potential candidates speculated to fill the vacancy include experienced figures such as David Moyes, Graham Potter, and Frank Lampard, among others.
In a statement, Leicester City expressed gratitude towards Cooper and his staff, including Assistant Manager Alan Tate and First Team Coach and Analyst Steve Rands, for their contributions during their time at the club. The club aims to appoint a new manager promptly to steer the team away from the relegation threat and build on the promising talents within the squad, such as goalkeeper Mads Hermansen and midfielder Boubakary Soumare.
