LaLiga: Why I Overlooked Odegaard at Real Madrid – Rafa Benitez Explains

Former Real Madrid manager Rafa Benitez has explained his decision to limit Martin Odegaard's playing time during his tenure at the club. Benitez, who managed Real Madrid from July 1, 2015, to January 4, 2016, stated that Odegaard was "too young in a team of big names."

Despite the Norwegian midfielder's potential, Benitez felt that the competitive environment at Real Madrid, filled with established stars, was not conducive for Odegaard to secure regular game time.

However, Benitez expressed no surprise but rather happiness at Odegaard's subsequent development and success, acknowledging the steps he has taken in his career since leaving the Spanish giants.

Odegaard, who joined Real Madrid from Stromsgodset in January 2015, had visited several top clubs, including Manchester United, Manchester City, and Liverpool, before deciding on Real Madrid. Despite the challenges he faced at the Santiago Bernabeu, Odegaard has no regrets about his choice, emphasizing his focus on becoming a better footballer.
