Lagos Youths Reject CONYL's Endorsement of Seyi Tinubu as Governor for 2027 Elections

A coalition of indigenous youths in Lagos has publicly rejected the endorsement of Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, as a candidate for the governorship of Lagos State in the upcoming 2027 elections. This endorsement was initially made by the Coalition of Nigerian Youth Leaders (CONYL), which represents youth groups from across Nigeria's six geopolitical zones.

In a statement issued on Tuesday in Owerri, Imo State, CONYL expressed support for Seyi Tinubu's candidacy, suggesting he could run for governor in either Osun or Imo State, where his family reportedly has roots. However, this move has been met with strong opposition from Lagos indigenous youths.

Abdul Kareem Whyte, speaking on behalf of the Lagos youths, criticized the endorsement, stating, "Non-indigenes should not be allowed to govern Lagos State." He emphasized that since 1999, no true Lagos indigene has held the position of governor, describing the endorsement as an attempt to marginalize the state's indigenous population.

The group further voiced concerns about the underdevelopment of Lagos and the distortion of its traditional systems due to successive governments. They also cautioned the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, against endorsing candidates ahead of the 2027 election, warning of potential political manipulation.

Meanwhile, Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, addressed his own political ambitions during a budget presentation. He remarked, "Becoming a governor is secondary as I have not given it serious consideration," indicating that while he acknowledges his familial ties, he does not rely on them for political legitimacy.
