Lagos State Sentenced A Teacher to Life Imprisonment for Raping 8-Year-Old Pupil

A 23-year-old teacher, John Osifo, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the rape of an eight-year-old pupil.

The verdict was delivered by Justice Ramon Oshodi, who found Osifo guilty of defilement under Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State.

The case, which has drawn significant public attention, involved harrowing testimony from the young victim, who recounted multiple incidents of abuse both during COVID-19 home lessons and school breaks.

According to court documents, these assaults took place between May 2020 and June 2021 at Marifod Private School in Ajamgbadi, Lagos.

Justice Oshodi stated, "The prosecution has proved beyond reasonable doubt the case of defilement. The prosecutrix's testimony is supported not only by medical evidence and her mother’s prompt reporting but also inadvertently corroborated by the defence witness’s admissions about the defendant’s unsupervised access."

The court heard detailed accounts from the victim, who described how Osifo would exploit opportunities during home lessons to isolate and assault her. She testified that he would instruct her brother to leave the room under the pretense of doing homework, then proceed to abuse her.

The victim also provided specific details about incidents at school, including being taken behind the toilet during break times.

Medical evidence presented by Dr. Mary Adenike Osuntoye confirmed findings consistent with sexual abuse, including an absent hymen and healed bruises. These findings were crucial in supporting the victim's testimony.

Osifo, who initially pleaded not guilty, was described by Justice Oshodi as having shown no remorse, instead fabricating stories and making false accusations against the victim's family. "You systematically manipulated a child, threatening her into silence and continued to abuse her over an extended period," Justice Oshodi remarked during sentencing.

Prosecution counsel B. E. Okeowo emphasized the breach of trust inherent in the case, stating, "The convict, who was a teacher to the survivor and entrusted with the prosecutrix and other students, took advantage of the survivor by having carnal knowledge of her on several occasions."
