The Lagos State Government has mandated that all approved gates and barriers on public roads in the Lekki axis must remain open daily from 5:00 AM to 10:00 PM. This directive comes amid concerns over unauthorized gate installations and the mismanagement of existing ones, which have been reported to disrupt traffic and impede emergency response efforts.
The Ministry of Transportation, in a statement released on Monday, highlighted the challenges posed by these gates. "The surge in unauthorized gates and the poor management of approved ones have significantly hindered traffic flow and emergency access," the statement read. The Ministry emphasized that such practices compromise public safety and undermine the state's efforts to maintain an interconnected road network.
To address these issues, the government has issued a stern warning that any gates installed without prior approval will be deemed illegal and subject to removal. Approved gates must adhere strictly to the operational hours and be manned by security personnel. Non-compliance will attract penalties, including fines and enforcement actions.
The Ministry reiterated its commitment to enforcing these regulations across Lagos, starting with the Lekki Axis. Residents and Community Development Associations (CDAs) are urged to report non-compliant gates for swift action. "Our objective is to ensure that only sanctioned gates are properly managed to optimize transportation and enhance safety," the Ministry stated.
This initiative aligns with broader efforts to improve urban mobility and public safety in Lagos.
