The Labour Party has announced its intention to take legal action against four of its members in the House of Representatives who recently defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The defectors, Chinedu Okere, Mathew Donatus, Akiba Bassey, and Esosa Iyawe, were reported to have switched allegiance following an announcement by the Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, who attributed their defection to an "internal crisis" within the Labour Party.

In response, Obiora Ifoh, the Labour Party's spokesman, refuted claims of any internal discord, stating, "There is absolute peace in the Labour Party.
Therefore, no one elected on the ticket of the Labour Party has the constitutional protection to decamp from the party along with the party’s mandate."

The Labour Party has instructed its legal team to initiate proceedings aimed at reclaiming the mandates of the defected representatives.
This legal move is grounded in the provisions of the 1999 Constitution and the 2022 Electoral Act, as amended.
Ifoh emphasized that the party is determined not to let this issue slide, shows their commitment to uphold electoral integrity and the rule of law.
