Kogi Ex-Governor Bello Initiates New Bail Appeal at FCT High Court

Former governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Adoza Bello, recently found himself at the center of a legal storm as he embarked on a fresh bail battle at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Abuja.

This development came after his recent bail victory at the Federal High Court, where Justice Emeka Nwite had granted him bail to the tune of ₦500 million. However, this triumph was short-lived as Bello faced new challenges in his ongoing legal saga.

Bello's legal troubles stem from allegations of corruption and money laundering brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The charges include a staggering ₦110 billion money laundering case, which has been a focal point of the EFCC's efforts to hold him accountable for alleged financial misconduct during his tenure as governor. Alongside Bello, two other individuals, Umar Shuaibu Oricha and Abdulsalami Hudu, are also implicated in these charges.

The former governor's legal team, led by Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Joseph Bodunde Daudu, filed a fresh bail application at the FCT High Court. This move was necessitated by an earlier decision by Justice Maryann Anenih, who had denied Bello bail on the grounds that his initial application was premature, having been filed before he surrendered himself to the authorities. Justice Anenih had ordered Bello's remand in Kuje Correctional Centre pending the outcome of his bail application.

Despite the setback, Bello remained undeterred. His legal team argued that the alleged offenses were bailable and emphasized the presumption of innocence until proven guilty. In a bid to secure his release, Bello pledged to adhere to any bail conditions imposed by the court and assured that he would not interfere with the ongoing investigations or witnesses involved in the case.

The hearing notice for the fresh bail application indicated that Justice Anenih, who had previously adjourned the matter to January 29, 2025, had reconsidered her stance to accommodate the new request. This development offered a glimmer of hope for Bello, who was determined to regain his freedom while awaiting trial.

The EFCC, represented by legal luminary Kemi Pinheiro, SAN, was expected to present its arguments against the bail application. However, given Bello's conduct in court and his willingness to cooperate with the legal process, there was speculation that the anti-graft agency might not object to the bail request.

Bello's legal woes have captured public attention, with many Nigerians closely following the proceedings. The former governor's case is one of several high-profile corruption cases that have highlighted the challenges of combating graft in Nigeria's political landscape.
