JUST IN: Court Grants Human Rights Lawyer Dele Farotimi ₦30m Bail

The Magistrate Court in Ado-Ekiti, the capital of Ekiti State, has granted bail to renowned human rights lawyer and activist, Dele Farotimi. The bail was set at ₦30 million amidst an ongoing defamation case against him.

Presiding over the case, Chief Magistrate Abayomi Adeosun outlined the conditions for Farotimi's release. "The defendant must provide two sureties, one of whom must be a property owner in Ado-Ekiti," stated Magistrate Adeosun.

Additionally, Farotimi is required to surrender his international passport to the court and is prohibited from engaging in media interviews until the case is resolved.

The charges stem from allegations of criminal defamation against Afe Babalola, a senior advocate of Nigeria, related to statements made in Farotimi's book, 'Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System'. The courtroom was under heavy security as Farotimi arrived for the hearing, reflecting the high-profile nature of the case.

Farotimi's legal team expressed relief at the court's decision. "We are pleased with the outcome and believe it is a step towards justice," commented one of his lawyers outside the courthouse.

The case has drawn considerable attention, with various rights groups and activists calling for Farotimi's release. The Afenifere group, a socio-political organization, had previously urged authorities to drop the charges, citing concerns over freedom of expression.
