JAMB Extends 16-Year Admission Age Limit to 2025 Following Pressure

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in Nigeria has announced an extension of the age limit for tertiary institution admissions.

This decision allows candidates who will turn 16 by August 31, 2025, to be eligible for admission into the 2024/2025 academic session, provided they meet the respective institution's standards.

This adjustment comes after the initial policy set earlier this year, which required candidates to be at least 16 years old by December 31, 2024. The change was prompted by feedback from parents and other stakeholders who expressed concerns over the fairness of the original cut-off date, especially for institutions with extended admission periods.

Fabian Benjamin, JAMB's Public Relations Officer, explained the rationale behind the decision: "This effort is to ensure equity because those whose 2024 admission would last till August 2025 would not be unduly favoured."

He further clarified that while JAMB has made this allowance, individual institutions retain the autonomy to adhere to the original age requirement if they choose.
