The 20th Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) celebrated a night of cinematic excellence on Saturday in Lagos, with Nollywood actor Femi Adebayo emerging as one of the biggest winners. His historical thriller, "Jagun Jagun," not only earned him the Best Actor in a Supporting Role but also clinched the Achievement Award in Visual Effects and Make-up.
The event, which highlighted the best in African cinema, saw Jackie Appiah winning the Best Actress in a Leading Role for her performance in "Red Carpet." Zolisa Xaluva took home the Best Actor in a Leading Role for "The Queenstown King."
"The Weekend," directed by Daniel Emeke Oriahi, was another standout film, securing the AMAA Best Film award along with accolades for Screenplay, Cinematography, and the National Film and Video Censors Board Award for Best Nigerian Film.
In other categories, Elsie Abang was awarded Best Actress in a Supporting Role for "KIPKEMBOI," while Michell Lemuya was recognized as the Best Young Promising Actor for "NAWI." The Best Feature Film by a Director went to "Letters to Goddo" by Harry Bentil, and Jahmil X.T Qubeka was named Best Director for "The Queenstown Kings."
Lifetime achievement awards were presented to Souleymane Cissé from Mali, Nacer Khemir from Tunisia, and Haile Gerima from Ethiopia. Special recognition awards were given to Alain Gomis from Senegal and Gabon, and Tsitsi Dangarembya from Zimbabwe.
Dr. Raymond Anyiam-Osigwe, CEO of AMAA, expressed gratitude to the team behind the ceremony, stating, "This event truly portrays the story of Africa on the global stage."
