The #EndBadGovernance protests in Nigeria, which took place from August 1-10, 2024, resulted in the arrest and charging of a massive number of protesters, particularly in the northern states.
According to a report dated August 18, 2024, titled "#EndBadGovernance ‘Prisoners’: No bail, no lawyers as courts send 1,423 protesters to prison," a total of 1,423 suspects were arrested, with Kano having the highest number at 832.
The charges against these individuals included "criminal conspiracy, inciting disturbance, riot, theft, mischief, and arson."
Despite promises from the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) to provide legal aid during arraignments, this support was not forthcoming. This failure has led to concerns over trial delays due to the slow judicial process, leaving many protesters in prison awaiting trial.
The report notes that "several protesters arrested in some states, mainly in the North, have been charged to court and remanded in prison pending their trial which may not commence anytime soon, going by the delay in trial which has characterized our courts
