INEC to Restart Voter Registration Nationwide in February 2025

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of Nigeria has announced plans to resume the nationwide continuous voter registration (CVR) in the first quarter of 2025.

This decision comes after a suspension of the CVR since July 2022, which was implemented ahead of the 2023 general elections. However, voter registration activities have continued in states with off-cycle elections.

According to a memo dated November 20, 2024, from INEC's Secretary, Rose Oriaran-Anthony, the commission is gearing up for this significant exercise.

The memo instructs resident electoral commissioners to begin preparations, initially focusing on local government areas (LGAs) before expanding to registration areas (RAs). "The commission is considering commencing the exercise at Local Government Area (LGA) level and later devolving to Registration Area (RA) level," the memo stated.

Preparations for the upcoming voter registration include assessing the status of INEC Voter Enrolment Devices (IVED), printers, and other necessary materials.

Additionally, state offices are tasked with selecting staff to serve as voter registration officials and compiling information on uncollected Permanent Voters' Cards (PVCs). This will facilitate the display of the Register of uncollected PVCs during the exercise.
