The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially refuted circulating social media rumours regarding the alleged death of its National Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu.
The commission categorically labeled these
reports as "fake news," emphasizing that Professor Yakubu is alive and actively engaged in his official duties.
The false narrative, which claimed that Professor Yakubu had passed away in a London hospital, first emerged on December 9.
In response, Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, issued a statement urging the public to dismiss the rumor. "We hereby appeal to the public to disregard the rumour. Prof. Yakubu is alive, hale and hearty. In fact, he has not travelled to London in the last two years," Oyekanmi stated.
To further dispel the misinformation, INEC highlighted Professor Yakubu's recent activities, including his participation in an interactive meeting with the House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Matters on December 11, and his leadership at a commission meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners on December 12.
