The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has firmly dismissed allegations made by governors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) concerning alleged electoral manipulation in the 2024 Edo State governorship election.
The controversy arose during a two-day meeting held in Jos, Plateau State, where PDP governors asserted that electoral irregularities had thwarted their candidate, Asue Ighodalo, from securing victory in Edo.
They further accused INEC of similar misconduct in the Ondo election, claiming that results were altered to favor the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, responded to these accusations, labeling them as "unfortunate and inappropriate." He emphasized that INEC, as a law-abiding institution, refrains from commenting on matters currently under judicial review.
Oyekanmi criticized the PDP governors for engaging in what he termed a "media trial," urging them instead to present any evidence they have in court. "It is not healthy to accept the outcome of an election only when you win," he remarked, advocating for a spirit of sportsmanship among political parties.
The electoral body had declared Monday Okpebholo of the APC as the winner of the Edo election with 291,667 votes, while the PDP's Dr. Asue Ighodalo garnered 247,274 votes.
In the Ondo election, INEC announced Lucky Aiyedatiwa as the victor, defeating PDP candidate Agboola Ajayi.
Oyekanmi defended the conduct of the Ondo election, describing it as one of the best-managed by the Commission.
