President Bola Tinubu has emphasized the necessity of increased funding for Nigeria's National Space Programme, highlighting its significance for the country's economic wellbeing.
During the celebration of Nigeria’s 25 years in Space and Technology, held at the Banquet Hall of the State House in Abuja, Tinubu, represented by the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji, addressed the National Assembly.
He urged them to prioritize funding for the space programme, stating that this would enable Nigeria to play a leading role in the fourth industrial revolution.
Tinubu stressed the importance of strengthening the act that established the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) to enhance the vibrancy of Nigeria's space ecosystem both locally and internationally.
He remarked, "Great effort should be made to ensure that the private sector is mainstreamed into the heart of our space program for us to do more in the coming years for our national development."
The President assured NASRDA and all stakeholders of his support in addressing future challenges and exploring better dividends of science and technology for Nigeria’s greatness. He expressed confidence in the nation’s space ecosystem, aiming to maintain Nigeria's leading position in Africa and engage more with other space-faring nations.
Tinubu noted, "Similarly, the sector will require improved budgetary support to be able to accomplish its programmes, whose outcomes can bring massive socioeconomic dividends to Nigeria and her citizens."
