Franklin Obiajuru Egwuatu, a young man residing in the Benin Republic since 2017, was brutally assaulted and extorted by officers of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS).
The event took place along the Seme-Badagry highway in Lagos. Franklin recounted his harrowing experience, stating, "They beat and accused me of fraud with no evidence to justify their accusations. I was subsequently taken to an uncompleted building where they threatened to shoot and kill me."
Despite finding nothing incriminating during a phone check, the officers insisted he was a "Yahoo boy," a term commonly used in Nigeria to describe internet fraudsters, due to his wife's phone number being from the Benin Republic.
Under duress, Franklin was coerced into transferring N100,000 to an account belonging to Apexze Global Concept Limited, a company incorporated in August 2023, with Joy Yakubu as its sole owner.
This account was linked to Moniepoint Microfinance Bank, highlighting a potential network of complicity in such extortion schemes.
