IGP Egbetokun Enforces Nationwide Ban on Arbitrary Arrests, Phone Searches, and Youth Harassment

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has issued a nationwide directive prohibiting arbitrary arrests, unauthorized phone searches, and harassment of youths by police officers.

This directive aims to restore public trust in the Nigerian Police Force and prevent further human rights violations.

The announcement comes amid growing criticism of the police's handling of citizens, particularly young Nigerians, which has been a significant point of contention since the #EndSARS protests.

These protests, sparked by allegations of police brutality, resulted in widespread destruction and loss of life across the country.

IGP Egbetokun emphasized the importance of this directive, stating, "The unlawful acts of arbitrary arrests and phone checks at checkpoints have severely tarnished the image of the police."

He warned that any officer found violating these orders would face strict disciplinary action, extending to the Commissioner of Police (CP) of the affected command and supervising officers.

To ensure compliance, a monitoring unit has been mobilized to enforce the new directive nationwide.

The IGP's decision has elicited mixed reactions from Nigerians, with some speculating that recent international criticisms, including those from figures like Kemi Badenoch, may have influenced this move.

The directive is part of a broader effort by the Nigerian Police Force to rebuild its public image and address concerns over abuse of power. "Failure to comply will result in severe consequences for offenders and their supervisors," the IGP stated unequivocally.
