IG Egbetokun Orders Investigation into Alleged Abuse of Minors in Police Custody

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has initiated an investigation into allegations concerning the mistreatment of minors detained during the #EndBadGovernance protests. This decision followed public outrage after 76 suspects, primarily minors, were arraigned in court, with six collapsing and requiring medical attention.

The IG, while attending a meeting in Algiers, Algeria, directed this probe to ensure the welfare of these young individuals in police custody was adequately addressed.

Upon receiving the investigative report in Glasgow, where he was participating in the Interpol General Assembly, Egbetokun committed to examining the findings thoroughly and addressing any procedural lapses identified.

In response to the incident, President Bola Tinubu ordered the withdrawal of charges against the minors. The Force Spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, emphasized the police's commitment to fairness and accountability, particularly for vulnerable groups.

To further enhance professionalism, the IGP summoned Deputy Commissioners of Criminal Investigation Department (DCs CID) and Heads of Investigation Units to a conference on child-friendly investigation methods scheduled for November 7th, 2024, at the Police Resource Centre in Jabi.
