The newly appointed manager of Leicester City, Ruud van Nistelrooy recently opened up about his emotional departure from Manchester United. In a candid conversation, Van Nistelrooy expressed his disappointment and hurt after being let go by the club.
He had stepped in as interim manager following the dismissal of Erik ten Hag and led the team to four wins and one draw in his brief tenure. Despite his success, when Ruben Amorim was appointed as the permanent head coach, Van Nistelrooy was not retained on the coaching staff.
Reflecting on his exit, Van Nistelrooy said, "The moment I took over the interim job, what I said was I’m here to help United and to stay to help United, and I meant it. So I was disappointed, very much so, and it hurts that I had to leave."
He emphasized the strong bond he shared with the club and its fans, stating that the only assistant role he would have considered was at Manchester United.
Despite the setback, Van Nistelrooy acknowledged the professionalism of his conversation with Amorim, describing it as "man to man, person to person, manager to manager," which helped him move forward.
This transition led him to his new role at Leicester City, where he aims to turn around the team's fortunes after a challenging start to the season. Van Nistelrooy has signed a contract with Leicester until June 2027, taking over from Steve Cooper, who was dismissed after just 12 Premier League matches.
