President Bola Ahmed Tinubu firmly stated that he has no plans to reduce the size of his cabinet, despite growing calls for downsizing.
The president's cabinet currently includes over 50 ministers, a structure he argues is essential for managing the affairs of a nation with a population exceeding 200 million.
During the media chat held on Monday, President Tinubu addressed the rationale behind maintaining a large cabinet. "I’m not prepared to bring down the number of my cabinet," he declared. "I saw the need for them when I created the portfolio. Nigeria is a large country. If you are to entertain over 200 million persons, calculate how many stewards will be required."
Tinubu emphasized that efficiency was the primary motivation for the current cabinet structure, showing its importance in ensuring effective governance across the vast and diverse nation.
He reiterated his commitment to this approach, stating, "Efficiency is the driving force behind the cabinet’s formation, and I am not willing to shrink its size."
In addition to discussing cabinet size, President Tinubu highlighted significant policy actions, including the removal of fuel subsidies in June 2023, which he described as crucial for economic restructuring.
He also expressed support for ongoing tax reform bills under review at the National Assembly, indicating a focus on fiscal policies aimed at enhancing Nigeria's financial framework.
