Renowned human rights lawyer and activist Dele Farotimi has been remanded in prison following allegations of defamation against the esteemed legal luminary Aare Afe Babalola, SAN.
The charges stem from claims that Farotimi maligned Babalola's character in his recent publication, 'Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System.'
Farotimi appeared before a Magistrate Court in Ado Ekiti, where he faced sixteen counts related to the alleged defamation. Despite pleading not guilty, the presiding judge, Magistrate Abayomi Adeosun, ordered his remand in prison custody, citing the need for further investigation.
The court has adjourned the case until December 10. The police prosecutor, Samson Osun, argued for Farotimi's detention, emphasizing the necessity of maintaining security during the ongoing investigation.
In contrast, Farotimi's counsel, Dayo Akeredolu, contended that the charges were bailable and urged the court to release his client on self-recognizance, highlighting that "the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty."
