Hollywood actor Denzel Washington has embraced a new spiritual path, becoming a gospel minister.
The celebrated actor, known for his powerful performances in films such as "Training Day" and "Glory," was baptized and received his minister's license on December 21, 2024, at the Kelly Temple Church of God in Christ, located in Harlem, New York City.
Washington, who turned 69 this year, has long been vocal about his Christian faith. He is a member of the West Angeles Church of God in Christ in Los Angeles and has often spoken about the influence of religion in his life.
In a past interview, he expressed, "A part of me still says, 'Maybe, Denzel, you're supposed to preach.'"
The baptism ceremony, which was live-streamed, marked a significant milestone in Washington's spiritual journey. It was attended by family, friends, and members of the church community. With his new minister's license, Washington is now eligible to be ordained in the future, further solidifying his commitment to his faith.
This development comes amidst Washington's ongoing transition from acting to more behind-the-scenes roles in the film industry. While he has clarified that he is not retiring from acting entirely, he has expressed a growing interest in directing and producing. His recent projects include directing "A Journal for Jordan" and starring in "Gladiator II."
Washington's decision to become a minister has been met with widespread admiration and support from fans and colleagues alike. His dedication to using his platform for good is evident not only in his career choices but also in his philanthropic efforts.
Over the years, he has donated millions to various causes, including $1 million to Save Africa's Children and another $1 million to Wiley College to revive its debate team.
