Afro eats star Rotimi recently opened up about his departure from 50 Cent's record label, G-Unit, citing creative differences as the primary reason. In an interview with Adesope Live, Rotimi explained that when he joined G-Unit in 2017/2018, Afrobeats had not yet achieved mainstream popularity in the Western music scene.
He noted that while artists like Davido and Wizkid were gaining traction in cities like Boston and New York, the genre was not widely recognized in Los Angeles at the time.
Rotimi recounted a conversation with 50 Cent, where the rapper questioned the sound Rotimi was pursuing. "He was like, ‘What’s this sound you are trying to do?’ I said, ‘Bro, it’s Afrobeats,'" Rotimi shared.
Despite having a promising track called "Love Rhythm," which he believed would become a hit, the lack of understanding and support for Afrobeats led to his decision to leave the label. Rotimi emphasized that 50 Cent allowed him to exit the deal amicably due to their differing visions.
Following his departure, Rotimi became the first Afrobeats artist to sign with Empire Distribution, a move that aligned more closely with his musical aspirations and vision. This transition marked a major step in his career, allowing him to further explore and promote the Afrobeats genre.
