A tragic incident recently unfolded in the Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State, Nigeria, as gunmen reportedly killed at least 11 people. The attack occurred during Christmas celebrations, casting a shadow over what should have been a joyous occasion for the local communities.

The assault took place in Nyiev-ya, a community within Kwande LGA, where residents were gathered with their families to celebrate the holiday. According to reports, the attackers, suspected to be herdsmen and militia groups, invaded the area, causing chaos and destruction.

A resident, who chose to remain anonymous, recounted the harrowing experience in a telephone conversation with Channels Television. "We received a distress message that 'Nyiev-ya is under attack.' The terrorist herders came this afternoon (December 25), and invaded Ubutu and GSS Anwase, killing and burning houses," the resident said. Among the victims was Daniel Jam's son, whose life was tragically cut short by the violence.

As the attack unfolded in Tse Azege community, another resident reported that a simultaneous assault was occurring in Ityuluv, also within Nyiev-ya. The President General of Mzough U Tiv (MUT) Worldwide, CP Iorbee Ihagh (retired), confirmed the attack, describing it as unprovoked.

He stated, "11 people were reportedly killed during the attack on Kwande LGA yesterday. The attack was unprovoked but the attackers who were herdsmen invaded the communities and attacked the people."

The aftermath of the attack left many missing, and leaders of the affected communities promptly reported the incident to the police. However, the Benue State Police Command has yet to issue an official response to the attacks in both Katsina-Ala and Kwande local government areas. When contacted, the Command’s spokesperson, Sewuese Anene, stated that she had no information on the incident.

The news of the attack has sent shockwaves through the region, prompting calls for swift action from local authorities. "If there is anything the chairman or the government will do, let it be fast. The news coming from Kwande is still not pleasant. The terrorist herders have continued with their onslaught against our people today, (December 26)," urged a concerned resident.

In the wake of the attack, the community is left grappling with grief and uncertainty. As they mourn the loss of their loved ones, there is a collective call for prayers and support from both divine and governmental sources. "Pray for our community for God’s and Government intervention," pleaded one resident, echoing the sentiments of many who are desperate for a resolution to the violence that has plagued their lives.
