Alhaji Tajudeen Baruwa, who was reinstated as the union's president by an Appeal Court, has raised concerns about the alleged support of a top government official for Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo.
This backing is purportedly aimed at facilitating Oluomo's takeover of the union's leadership.
Baruwa, expressing his satisfaction with the court's decision, emphasized his commitment to justice and non-violence.
He stated, "I believe in justice and Nigerians also believe in justice. That is why you see me going to court over the leadership of the National Union of Road Transport Workers."
Despite the court ruling in his favor, Baruwa criticized the current situation where MC Oluomo occupies the presidential position of the NURTW. He remarked, "There was no election.
The constitution of the union is very clear. Our election is once in four years, which we did in May and August."
The controversy is further fueled by rumors that a high-ranking government official has been supporting MC Oluomo. Baruwa noted, "I only heard the rumour that a top government official had been supporting him.
But it is a rumour because I did not hear it from the top government official himself."
Baruwa, a Yoruba man and member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), downplayed concerns about President Bola Tinubu's potential influence on the union's affairs. He stated, "MC Oluomo is not the only son or loyalist of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
You and I and other Nigerians are Bola Tinubu’s sons now."
He also addressed the perception of violence associated with the NURTW, asserting, "We are not in support of violence. In our union, we don’t fight.
Even if we have any misunderstanding as union members, within the next 20 minutes or one hour, that misunderstanding must have been resolved."
