Governors’ Wives Pushes for Implementation of 6-Month Maternity Leave Policy

The Nigerian Governors’ Wives Forum (NGWF) has made a pivotal call to action, urging governors and state legislators across Nigeria's 36 states to implement a six-month paid maternity leave policy. This appeal was articulated in a communique issued at the conclusion of their annual retreat held at Exco Chamber’s Centenary City in Abakaliki.

The forum's chairperson, Olufolake Abdulrazaq, who is also the wife of the Kwara governor, emphasized that the adoption of this policy would significantly enhance maternity and child welfare throughout the country.

Mrs. Abdulrazaq stated, "The forum pledged to vigorously advocate for adopting six months of paid maternity leave, engaging executive governors and state legislators to promote this policy across all states for improved maternity and child welfare."

She further highlighted the forum's endorsement of the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation (GAVI) Initiative, aimed at safeguarding girls' health.

The forum is committed to continuing its advocacy for the uptake of the HPV vaccine to protect women's health, with plans for selective sensitization of local government chairmen's wives on HPV vaccine and cancer awareness.

The meeting, attended by 23 wives of state governors, also observed a moment of silence in memory of Patience Eno, the late wife of the Akwa Ibom governor, who passed away on September 26.
