Governor Monday Okpebholo has reversed several policies implemented by his predecessor, Godwin Obaseki.
This policy shift aims to strengthen the role of the Oba of Benin and rectify perceived injustices from the previous administration.
Governor Okpebholo announced the abolition of the new traditional councils established by Obaseki in the Edo South senatorial district.
In a statement issued by Fred Itua, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, it was confirmed that "the statutory financial entitlements of the Benin Traditional Council (BTC) have been restored," ensuring that the status quo prior to the creation of these councils is maintained.
Furthermore, the governor has aligned with the Federal Government's directive to reinstate the full statutory rights of the Oba of Benin over artefacts looted during the 1897 Benin massacre.
The administration has also rescinded the revocation of the concession of the Oba Akenzua II Cultural Centre, committing to restore it for its original purpose.
Governor Okpebholo emphasized the importance of respecting traditional institutions, stating, "The Oba of Benin, as the father of all Benin people, is the sole custodian of the customs and traditions of the Benin people."
He pledged his administration's support to ensure the Monarch plays his rightful role as the custodian of the rich cultural heritage of the Benin people.
