Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has taken decisive action by suspending all civil service recruitment in the state indefinitely. This decision, announced on November 22, 2024, comes amid allegations of clandestine recruitment activities within various government bodies.
The governor has ordered a thorough review of all employment exercises conducted by the previous administration led by Godwin Obaseki from May to November 2024.
The suspension was disclosed in a notice signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Musa Ikhilor, and shared with the media by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua.
The notice highlighted reports of "clandestine activities being perpetrated by some commissions, boards, parastatals and agencies of government in the state," which included issuing backdated letters of employment without following due process.
Governor Okpebholo emphasized his administration's commitment to fairness and equity, insisting that all employment exercises should be merit-based, competitive, and accessible to all Edo indigenes. To address these irregularities, he directed the immediate suspension of all recruitment processes and mandated a review of all appointments made since May 2024 by various government entities. Heads of ministries, departments, and agencies have been advised to comply with this directive.
