The All Progressives Congress (APC) has firmly defended Governor Monday Okpebholo's election against claims from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that he was "selected" rather than elected.
The controversy erupted following a press briefing by the PDP, where Dr. Anthony Aziegbemi, the caretaker committee chairman, labeled Okpebholo as "Governor-select."
Aziegbemi criticized Okpebholo's early days in office, accusing him of setting a "dangerous tone for crisis" and alleging misconduct by his supporters.
The PDP's grievances include accusations of thuggish behavior by individuals linked to Okpebholo, failure to resign from his Senate seat, and improper procurement practices involving over N5 billion worth of vehicles.
Aziegbemi warned that these actions could lead to a "conflagration" if not addressed. In response, Prince Kassim Afegbua of the APC dismissed these allegations as unfounded.
He emphasized that "Edo people in their thousands elected [Okpebholo] on September 21, 2024," highlighting the democratic nature of the election. Afegbua accused the PDP of "crying wolf where there is none," asserting that the election was a clear mandate from the people to move past previous governance issues.
Afegbua further stated, "The APC won convincingly even in the reports written by the chairman of PDP they conceded victory to APC." He assured that the party would provide evidence if challenged, shows the legitimacy of Okpebholo's governorship.
