Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State has urged President Bola Tinubu to take immediate and decisive action to address the widespread hunger and economic hardship plaguing Nigeria.
Fintiri emphasized that it is insufficient for the President to merely acknowledge the grievances of Nigerians without implementing tangible solutions.
He stated, "The lesson we must derive from the protest is the constant reminder that it is not enough to tell the citizens we have heard. We must be seen as doing the needful in providing solutions to citizens’ concerns."
Governor Fintiri's call to action came in response to the #EndBadGovernance protests that had erupted across various states, including Adamawa.
Despite the peaceful nature of the protests in his state, Fintiri highlighted the genuine and urgent demands of the people, noting, "None of us can deny that there is hunger and general poverty."
He commended the residents for their conduct during the protests and stressed the importance of the Federal Government heeding the calls of the populace.
The protests, which saw huge activity on August 1st and 2nd, have since subsided in Adamawa State, with no incidents of violence reported. However, the underlying issues of food insecurity and economic instability remain pressing concerns.
The World Food Programme (WFP) has reported that conflict and insecurity, rising inflation, and climate crises are driving hunger in Nigeria, with 26.5 million people projected to face acute hunger during the June-August 2024 lean season.
