Ghanaian Politicians Barely Switch Party Every General Election –INEC Chair Mahmood Says

Chairman of Nigeria's Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu has spoken regarding the political landscape in Ghana.

The focus is on the rarity of party-switching among Ghanaian politicians during general elections, a practice that contrasts with the more fluid party affiliations seen in Nigeria. This commentary was made in light of Ghana's 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections.

"Rarely in Ghana do you see people moving from one party to another with every general election," Yakubu noted. This consistency provides both political stability and voter loyalty, as supporters remain committed to their chosen parties regardless of whether they are in power or opposition.

Ghana has adopted a decentralized approach to managing election results, allowing constituency-level officers to announce parliamentary results locally. This method, inspired by Nigerian practices, has expedited the announcement process, particularly for presidential elections.

The success of John Dramani Mahama, who won the presidency after multiple attempts, exemplifies the perseverance and resilience within Ghana's political framework.

In Nigeria, frequent party-switching is common, often leading to political instability and shifting allegiances. This difference highlights the unique political culture in Ghana, where party loyalty is more entrenched.

The mutual learning between Ghana and Nigeria in electoral management demonstrates the benefits of cross-national collaboration in enhancing democratic processes.
