German football club FC St. Pauli has announced its departure from the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.
The club expressed grave concerns over the platform's potential to influence political processes, particularly the upcoming German parliamentary elections.
FC St. Pauli, which competes in Germany's top-tier league, accused Elon Musk, the owner of X, of transforming the platform into what they describe as a "hate machine."
According to the club, this transformation has allowed racism, conspiracy theories, and hate speech to proliferate unchecked, posing a threat to democratic discourse.
The decision to leave X follows similar actions by other organizations, including The Guardian, which also exited the platform after Musk's involvement in the U.S. presidential election.
In a statement on their website, FC St. Pauli warned that "Elon Musk had turned a space for debate into an amplifier of hate that was capable of influencing the German parliamentary election campaign."
Despite ceasing new posts, the club will keep its existing content online due to its historical value.
They have encouraged their followers to join them on BlueSky, a different social media platform, as they continue to advocate for diversity and inclusion.
