Negotiations between Israel and Hamas for a ceasefire in Gaza have reportedly entered a "decisive and final phase," according to a senior Palestinian negotiator.
The talks, which also aim to secure the release of hostages, have seen intensified mediation efforts by the United States, Qatar, and Egypt.
A senior Palestinian official involved in the indirect discussions stated, "The talks are now in a decisive and final phase."
This sentiment was echoed by Israel’s Defence Minister, Yoav Gallant, who remarked that an agreement is "closer than ever."
The proposed plan, structured in three phases, outlines the release of civilian hostages and women soldiers within 45 days, followed by an Israeli withdrawal from key areas in Gaza.
The second phase involves the release of remaining hostages and a complete withdrawal of Israeli forces, culminating in a formal end to hostilities.
Despite the progress, significant challenges remain. Israel's Defence Minister Katz emphasized the necessity of dismantling Hamas’s military and governmental power in Gaza, asserting, "Israel will have security control over Gaza with full freedom of action." Such statements may complicate negotiations, as Hamas demands specific terms for any ceasefire.
The conflict, initiated by Hamas with a large-scale attack on southern Israel in October 2023, has resulted in approximately 1,200 Israeli deaths and the abduction of 253 individuals.
Over 100 hostages have since been released or rescued. The war has devastated Gaza, with more than 45,000 Palestinians killed and widespread displacement affecting its 2.3 million residents.
