Fuel Importation Hits 2.3bn litres Despite Dangote and Port Harcourt Refineries

Nigeria's Fuel Imports Surge to 2.3 Billion Litres Despite New Refinery Operations" In a surprising development, Nigeria's importation of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, has soared to 2.3 billion litres between September 11 and December 5, 2024.

This increase comes despite the operational commencement of two major refineries, Dangote and Port Harcourt, which were expected to significantly reduce the country's reliance on imported fuel.

According to data from the Nigerian Ports Authority, this continued importation contradicts earlier commitments by oil marketers and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to halt imports.

The Dangote Refinery, with a substantial production capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, began its operations on September 15, 2024. Meanwhile, the Port Harcourt refinery started its production and truck-out of PMS on November 26, 2024. Despite these developments, if imports persist.

In the past three days, approximately 52,000 metric tonnes of petrol, equivalent to about 68.74 million litres, have been imported into Nigeria.

These shipments arrived at key ports including Apapa, Tin Can, and Calabar, carried by vessels such as Binta Saleh, Shamal, and Watson.

This ongoing importation is particularly striking given recent agreements between the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) and Dangote Refinery for direct sales, alongside the Federal Government's announcement allowing marketers to source petrol directly from Dangote refinery.
