Free Nnamdi Kanu to Restore Peace in South-East, Igbo Group Tells Tinubu

The Ndigbo Unity Forum (NUF) has called on Nigerian President Bola Tinubu to release Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), as a crucial step towards resolving the ongoing crisis in the South-East region.

The group argues that Kanu's detention has been a significant factor in the unrest, particularly the disruptive Monday sit-at-home protests, which have severely impacted the region's economy and education.

The NUF, represented by its President Augustine Chukwudum and Secretary-General Tony Igbokwe, stated, "The continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu has led to substantial financial losses and academic setbacks in the South-East."

They criticized previous administrations for ignoring appeals from prominent Igbo leaders for Kanu’s release, noting that the region, once peaceful, has faced escalating challenges since his arrest.

To address these issues, the NUF proposed forming a delegation of South-East governors, lawmakers, traditional rulers, and influential Igbo women leaders to negotiate with President Tinubu.

The group also urged regional leaders to prioritize development in security, agriculture, and infrastructure, emphasizing the potential for significant revenue generation through agricultural initiatives.
