A severe gridlock has brought traffic to a standstill along the Minna-Suleja, Maje-Jere, and Abuja-Kaduna expressways, leaving thousands of motorists and passengers stranded for four consecutive days.
The congestion, primarily caused by a massive buildup of trailer trucks, stretches from Maje in Suleja to Izom in Gurara Local Government Area of Niger State, extending further to Jere in Kaduna State and affecting the Kaduna-Abuja expressway.
Eyewitnesses report that while four trailers were involved in accidents, they did not completely block the road.
However, the sheer volume of traffic has severely hindered the free flow of vehicles. "It's been a nightmare," said Musa Yahuza, a stranded passenger. "We had no choice but to hire motorcycles at exorbitant prices just to continue our journey."
The gridlock has forced many travelers to endure significant hardships, including hunger, as they remain stuck on the highways.
Some enterprising individuals have taken advantage of the situation, selling bread to desperate travelers. Hajiya Salmat Ibn Kasim, another affected passenger, shared her ordeal: "I had to pay N7,500 to charter a motorcycle from Jere to Lambata. It's been a very difficult experience."
Despite the severity of the situation, there has been a noticeable absence of intervention from the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) or the Nigerian Police.
No personnel were seen attempting to alleviate the congestion, and neither the Niger State Command of the FRSC nor the state police have issued an official statement regarding the incident.
