Former Presidential Candidates Atiku and Peter Obi Play Down 2027 Presidential Ambition

Former presidential candidates Atiku Abubakar of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) and Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) met for breakfast in Yola, Adamawa State.

This meeting coincided with the 20th anniversary of the American University of Nigeria (AUN), where Obi was invited as the keynote speaker.

The university, founded by Atiku, served as the backdrop for what many initially speculated to be a strategic political meeting. However, both Atiku and Obi have been quick to dispel rumors regarding their ambitions for the 2027 presidential election.

Atiku's spokesperson, Paul Ibe, clarified the nature of the meeting, stating, "Let us not jump the gun.

The fact is that Obi accepted to be the keynote speaker at the 20th anniversary of AUN and the 16th Founder’s Day, which was a milestone.

The truth is that politics cannot separate friends." Obi's media aide, Ibrahim Umar, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that the meeting had "no political undertone." He remarked, "There was nothing like that. They just invited him (Obi) to deliver a speech there. It has nothing to do with politics."

Despite these clarifications, the meeting has sparked a variety of reactions across the political spectrum. Some observers view it as a potential precursor to a political alliance, while others see it as a genuine reunion of old friends.
