Nigeria's Super Eagles have experienced a significant drop in the latest FIFA World Rankings, falling from 36th to 44th position. This eight-place decline marks the largest drop globally for this ranking period, as reported by Bold Sports.
The rankings, released on Thursday, reflect the Super Eagles' recent underwhelming performances in their final qualifiers for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). During this period, Nigeria managed only a 1-1 draw against Benin Republic in Abidjan and suffered a disappointing 2-1 defeat at home to Rwanda in Uyo. Despite these setbacks, the team had already secured their qualification for the AFCON tournament in Morocco next year.
Interim coach Austin Eguavoen commented on the team's performance, stating, "We are disappointed with the results, but we remain focused on preparing for the upcoming AFCON tournament."
Globally, Argentina continues to lead the FIFA rankings, followed by France, Spain, England, and Brazil. In Africa, Morocco maintains its top position, ranked 14th worldwide, while Senegal has climbed to 17th globally, securing second place on the continent. Nigeria's slip has seen them fall to fifth in Africa, overtaken by Algeria, which now holds the fourth spot.
The next update to the FIFA World Rankings is scheduled for December 19, 2024.
