The Federal Government has announced plans to recruit 74,000 teachers. This initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Education, aims to employ 2,000 teachers annually in each of the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
The first phase of this ambitious recruitment drive is set for completion by December 2024.
The decision comes in response to growing concerns about the lack of teaching staff, particularly highlighted by the fact that 18 states have not recruited new teachers in the past five years. The Universal Basic Education Commission has underscored the urgency of the situation, noting the critical shortage of teachers in public schools.
According to a roadmap obtained by Saturday PUNCH, the Ministry of Education stated, "States are to recruit a minimum of 2,000 qualified teachers annually, certified by the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN)."
To ensure the success of this plan, the Minister of State for Education will engage with state governors to secure their cooperation and commitment.
