The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially upgraded Maiduguri's Muhammadu Buhari Airport to international status, with full international operations set to commence on January 1, 2025.
This significant development was announced by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, highlighting the strategic importance of northeastern Nigeria, particularly Borno State, as a vital commercial hub linking Nigeria to other countries.
Minister Keyamo emphasized the potential economic benefits of this upgrade, stating, "The establishment of an international airport in Maiduguri is strategic for receiving international flights coming in from the Middle East into this country.
It has the capacity, size, population, and infrastructure to support an international airport." He further noted that the economic potential of Borno State remains largely untapped, and this upgrade sets the region on a path towards economic revitalization.
Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum, who also serves as the Chairman of the North East Governors Forum, expressed his satisfaction with the new status of the airport. He commended the Federal Government for its efforts in transforming the aviation sector, saying, "The services in the sector have improved; anyone can attest to that." Governor Zulum also called for the establishment of a national air carrier to serve the interests of Nigerians.
While the airport upgrade is seen as a positive step towards economic growth, it has sparked mixed reactions among the public. Some commentators have questioned the prioritization of airport development over agriculture, a critical sector for the region.
One commentator remarked, "But the fixation on airports instead of agriculture in such a state doesn't look like we are getting our priorities right."
Security concerns have also been raised, given the history of instability in Borno State. A user on a popular forum questioned, "Aren't they supposed to solve the insecurity issues pounding that state first before they do this?"
Despite these concerns, the Federal Government remains optimistic about the potential benefits of the airport upgrade. The move is expected to enhance connectivity and stimulate economic activities in the region, contributing to the broader goal of national development.
