The federal government has begun to convert 50 vehicles in Caduna into Zalia in the framework of the compressed presidential election on natural gas (P-CNGI).
Natural Gas President Initiative (P-CNGI) tried to relieve Nigerians by promoting the use of compressed natural gas (GNC) as a cleaner and affordable alternative to replace fuel.
Speaking to journalists during the preliminary testing of 50 vehicles owned by members of the Commercial Transport Union in Zaria, Kaduna State, at the weekend, the Team Leader of the CNG Initiative at the National Institute of Transport Technology (NITT) Centre, Dauda Suleiman, an Assistant Director of NITT, said the beneficiaries included members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers of Nigeria, National Association of Transport Owners and Taxi Association, among others. He said the removal of petrol subsidy and government’s focus on CNG was due to its abundance and cheaper cost. "Compressed natural gas is priced at N230 per kilogram in Abuja and N455 in Kaduna, making it cheaper than petrol.
Moreover, compressed natural gas can travel longer distances than petrol, making it a cost-effective option. The removal of petrol subsidy and government's focus on compressed natural gas is driven by its abundance and low cost," he said. "Conversion costs will vary depending on location and kit availability, but we are committed to making this initiative accessible to everyone.
The first 50 cars will receive a free conversion kit, while the remaining cars will have the kit available at an affordable price. He explained that the removal of oil subsidies and the government's focus on CNG is due to its abundance and low cost.
We are working to ensure that transition costs are not a barrier to adoption," he said. "Currently, there is limited availability of CNG in Kaduna with only one filling station available. We are confident that government will set up more CNG stations across the country," he said. On maintenance and sustainability, Suleiman said that the GNC was 90%maintenance-free, adding that “the GNC requires minimal maintenance beyond the regular maintenance of vehicles. We also offer mechanical training programs to respond to all concerns."
"Public awareness and education are crucial for the success of the initiative.CNG is the future of the Nigeria transport sector. We are committed to making this effort a success and ensuring Nigerians benefit from the reduced fuel costs and increased efficiency that CNG brings.
"CNG is not just a fuel, it is a game changer. We are proud to be part of this effort and look forward to the impact it will have on Nigeria's transport sector," he said.
