The Nigerian government has yet to take decisive action against 60 private jets operating in the country without paying import duties, a situation complicated by ongoing legal proceedings.
This update was provided by Abdullahi Maiwada, spokesperson for the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), on December 4.
In June, the NCS had summoned nearly 80 privately-owned aircraft to present their import documents or face grounding.
However, despite setting a deadline for November 14,, the NCS has not grounded these jets. Maiwada explained, "There are issues that border on some court processes, and any disclosure will very much interfere with the processes, and that is why we cannot update the public about it."
The legal entanglements began in November 2022 when several owners of foreign-registered private jets, including prominent business figures and major commercial banks, initiated court actions against the federal government.
They sought to prevent the government from grounding their planes over alleged unpaid import duties.
