FG Hands Over Electricity Regulation to Lagos State

The Nigerian government has officially transferred regulatory oversight of the electricity market to the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission (LASERC).

This move was announced by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and is in accordance with the amended Electricity Act of 2023.

The transfer signifies a pivotal shift in Nigeria's approach to managing its electricity sector, aiming to decentralize regulation and enhance localized management.

LASERC will now assume responsibilities previously held by NERC, including setting electricity tariffs within Lagos State.

In a statement, NERC explained, "In compliance with the amended Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Electricity Act 2023, the Commission has issued an order to transfer regulatory oversight of the electricity market in Lagos State from the Commission to the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission."

Furthermore, NERC has directed Eko Electricity Distribution Plc and Ikeja Electric Plc to establish subsidiaries within 60 days from December 5, 2024.

These subsidiaries will be tasked with managing the intrastate supply and distribution of electricity in Lagos State. The transition process is expected to be completed by June 4, 2025.
