FG Given 48-Hour Deadline to Free Dele Farotimi

The Nigerian federal government has been issued a 48-hour ultimatum to release Dr. Dele Farotimi, a prominent human rights lawyer currently detained in Ekiti State.

The demand was made by Comrade Timi Frank, a former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who criticized the arrest as an attempt to stifle dissent against President Bola Tinubu's administration.

Dr. Farotimi's detention stems from a defamation charge linked to his book, "Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System," where he accused Senior Advocate of Nigeria Afe Babalola of compromising the Supreme Court.

However, Frank argues that the arrest is not merely about defamation but is part of a broader effort to silence Farotimi's outspoken opposition to government policies.

He stated, “Farotimi does not deserve this. He is a man who believes in and respects the rule of law."

Frank has called for mass action if the government fails to release Farotimi within the stipulated time, warning, “If they don’t release him unconstitutionally within 48 hours, Nigerians should occupy all police stations and formations.”

He also condemned the judiciary and police for allegedly becoming tools of oppression under the current administration.
