The Federal Government of Nigeria has inaugurated a 16-member committee to address consequential salary adjustments.
This follows the approval of the National Minimum Wage Act, 2024, which raises the minimum wage for federal workers from N30,000 to N70,000.
The inauguration took place on Friday, September 13th, 2024. The committee, chaired by Mrs. Didi Walson-Jack, Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (HCSF), was established to ensure a fair and equitable salary structure for federal civil servants.
Speaking at the inauguration, Walson-Jack emphasized the importance of this adjustment, stating, “Consequently, there is a need to adjust the salaries of other categories of staff, taking into consideration the consequential effect of the new minimum wage.”
President Bola Tinubu approved the wage increase as part of his Renewed Hope Agenda, which aims to lift Nigerians out of poverty and create an enabling environment for prosperity.
"This singular act is aimed at enhancing the economic wellbeing of the working populace of Nigeria, in view of current economic realities," Walson-Jack noted. She further explained that the wage increase represents a 133.33% rise from the previous minimum wage and is expected to boost workers' commitment and productivity.
The President also assured that the minimum wage would be reviewed every three years instead of the statutory five years, as stipulated in the Minimum Wage Amendment Act.
This proactive approach is designed to keep pace with economic changes and ensure that workers' salaries remain competitive.
The formation of this committee marks a crucial step in implementing the new wage policy effectively. It shows the government's commitment to improving the living standards of its workforce and driving socio-economic development across the nation.
