Exiled Syrian Ex President Bashar Al-Assad Finds Refuge in Russia

Former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has been granted asylum in Russia.

This move comes after Assad's departure from Syria, marking the end of nearly six decades of his family's rule. According to a Kremlin source, the asylum was granted on humanitarian grounds, as reported by Russian news agencies.

The decision follows a dramatic shift in Syria's political landscape, with rebel fighters entering Damascus unopposed.

The Kremlin source emphasized that "Russia favours a political solution to the crisis in Syria," highlighting Moscow's longstanding support for Assad during the country's protracted civil war.

In addition to providing refuge to Assad and his family, the asylum agreement ensures the security of Russian military bases in Syria, including the strategically vital naval facility in Tartous.

This base is crucial for Russia's military operations in the Mediterranean and beyond, serving as a repair and replenishment hub.

The Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed that Assad had left Syria and issued "orders for a peaceful transfer of power."

Despite the upheaval, the ministry assured that there is "currently no serious threat" to the security of its military installations in Syria.
