Ex-Lawmaker Farouk Lawan Freed After 5-Year Sentence

F.Adenike

A former member of Nigeria's House of Representatives, Farouk Lawan, has been released from Kuje Prison after serving a five-year sentence for corruption.

His case has been a focal point in discussions about political accountability and corruption in Nigeria.

Lawan was convicted in 2021 for accepting a $500,000 bribe from Femi Otedola, Chairman of Zenon Petroleum and Gas Ltd.

This conviction was upheld by the Nigerian Supreme Court earlier this year, with Justice John Okoro stating, "The evidence was overwhelming, and the judgment of the Court of Appeal stands."

The release of Lawan has reignited discussions on corruption within Nigerian governance. A video showing his release on October 22, has circulated widely, prompting renewed calls for transparency and accountability in politics.
